In-Side-Out​
The project is to design a Transmediatecque in downtown Ann Arbor. The site situates on the edge of downtown area, 2 minutes away from the busiest street in the city, which is also on the boundary between residential area and the commercial streets.
The program of this project includes auditorium, train platforms, offices, meeting rooms, gallery and lounge areas. Nowadays, most architecture with similar functions has a very similar superficial style, which is huge curtain walls, strong geometry, steel structure, metal panels, and etc. The typology and materiality for most of them are relatively consistent no matter where they are. When the project started, I intuitively designed a superficial style building. However, in downtown Ann Arbor, the typology of the architecture, especially downtown area is relatively in small scale, and conventional. The thinking I had afterwards was if we want to building a superficial architecture how do we fit it into the city.
